2G spectrum scam: Attorney General to file PM's affidavit in Supreme Court today

New Delhi:  The Attorney General of India, GE Vahanvati, will file an affidavit on behalf of the Prime Minister in the Supreme Court today to explain why he took close to a year to respond to a request for the prosecution of former Telecom Minister A Raja for allegedly orchestrating the massive 2G scam.

The Supreme Court had given time till Saturday for the affidavit to be filed on behalf of the Prime Minister. The Attorney General will place the records with an affidavit rebutting every charge made by petitioner - former Law Minister Subramanian Swamy. (Read: Court wants affidavit on PM's behalf)

The Attorney General replaces Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium, who appeared for the PM till Thursday. Under fire from the Supreme Court and a united Opposition over the Prime Minister's alleged inaction on a plea seeking prosecution of A Raja, the government on Friday decided to get the top legal officer of the country to present the PM's case in the apex court.

Sources have told NDTV the Prime Minister wanted the Attorney General to represent him for effective representation. "It is the different case. Then the Solicitor-General was present and he represented. Today, we've made a pucca arrangement. He (Gopal Subramanium) is also a brilliant lawyer. There's nothing to read into this," Law Minister Veerappa Moily said.
